Sumatras are an
exceedingly rare and largely wild breed thought to
be closely related to the jungle fowl of the Far East. They're kept for ornamental purposes alone, because they don't lay well
and aren't hefty enough to be a good meat bird. Beauty, though, they have in spades!
Their striking, distinctive carriage sets them apart: Their tails are held low, and in the male particularly is abundant and sweeping, like the tail of a pheasant. In fact, Sumatra chickens were once known as the "Sumatran Pheasant" and the "Java Pheasant Game." Males often even sport multiple spurs on each leg.
These chicks are blue Sumatras, and so will hatch out in the 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash ratio. All colors are stunning in this marvelous bird: the blue is smoky and mysterious while the pale "splash" birds have a ghostly appearance, much like white peacocks. Sumatras with black feathers glimmer darkly in the sunlight, as metallic shades of blue, bronze, green and purple, haunt their abundant ebony feathers iridescently; in twilight, those colors scatter and disappear like scarab beetles when disturbed.

Sumatras are exceptionally stately birds; our blue lines are mild-natured, easily handled and sociable when raised with affection, although they need to have space to roam and don't deal well with close confinement. Sumatras make an
excellent choice for exhibition, and--even better!--will make your other chicken-keeping friends green with envy!
