Introduced to the US from England in the late 1800's, the beautiful Orpingtons soon became
one of the most popular farm fowls in this country. These are sweet, gentle and beautiful birds in the heavy
breed class, ranging from 7 to 8 pounds. Egg production is about 3 per week.
Orpingtons are quiet and stately--seldom prone to flying when they have rached their full weight. The males are usually gentle and make good roosters for the flock. Hens are good layers all year round--excellent
winter layers, producing large brown eggs steadily right through the coldest weather.
These fluffy birds are some of the best setters and mothers, too (and the golden, fuzzy chicks are adorably just what we think of when we picture baby chicks!). The docile Buff Orpington
has been one of the most popular varieties for years and years with
their glistening golden plumage and pinkish white skin.
