Bantam brahmas are
gentle sweeties with feathered legs and feet and profuse, fluffy
feathering. Large
fowl Brahmas are HUGE chickens, and this is the "light" plumage color. They tend to be calm, friendly
birds not prone to being startled easily. The mature hens are not good flyers due to their large size, and often can be massive enough that smaller hawks are less inclined to bother with them.
Originally from India, this breed was designed for meat
production, though the hens lay relatively decently and are great
setters and mothers. It is not used for a "meat breed" today because
they grow so slowly, and can take almost a year to reach full size (as
compared with six weeks for modern meat hybrids.) Lucky for the Brahmas!
This fancy breed of chicken makes a great pet. They are tolerant of
both heat and cold, and lay very large eggs at a decent rate, although they do occasionally go broody. If you want nice, calm pet chickens with the added benefit of good laying, this is one of the best breeds to choose.
