As the name indicates, this breed originated in the state of New Hampshire. New Hampshire
Reds are derived directly from Rhode Island Reds, and over the years
they've changed so much from selective breeding that they've come to be
recognized as a new breed.
They are a winter hardy breed that matures early and are good producers
of large brown eggs. Average weekly production is 3 eggs per week. With their pretty golden chestnut red plumage, they are unusually handsome and vigorous and will forage well if allowed to
free range. The mature birds are a lighter and more
even shade than the Rhode Island Reds, and the baby chicks are also a
lighter red. They are faithful producers and good setters. The hens are truly
lovely and mellow birds that are sweet, friendly and sociable by nature.
