Leghorns (pronounced LEG-gern) originate in Livorno, Italy. Like all Mediterranean breeds, they're small-bodied, active, good foragers, with a reputation for some flightiness. They are also excellent layers of white eggs, seldom going broody. Leghorns and other Mediterranean breeds deal better with heat than cold due to their large combs, which are subject to frostbite.
Brown Leghorns are generally recognized as the most colorful of the Leghorn breed. Roosters are handsome
with orange hackle and saddle and black stripes in center of each
feather. The female is medium brown with delicate penciling; her wings
are a darker brown, while her breast is salmon colored--very attractive, indeed!
Leghorn chicks are very
lively and will need a brooder with a top, or they will soon begin to fly out and populate your house! This breed is a true staple for the person
desiring dependable and abundant egg producing chickens.
