The Brinsea EcoGlow 50 is a safe, tough, and economical-over-the-long-haul heater/brooder for up to forty baby chicks. Seems expensive, right? It is -- there's no doubt. But let us explain you why this is our favorite chick heater on the market.

Fire hazard: we only use low-wattage heaters, because... The cheaper alternative, infrared heat bulbs, can reach 435° or more and pose a real fire hazard. Understanding that we run the risk of sounding like pushy salespeople, we have to impress upon you: heat lamp-caused fires are all too real. They have happened to our own staff; tragically, a woman even died from a heat lamp fire in her home. New cases pop up in the news every year. So, if there is only one item you can afford to splurge on for your backyard flock, we highly recommend that it be a safe heater like this one or these other models.

Why it'll save you money: The EcoGlow 50 uses only 60 watts--less than a quarter of the electricity of typical suspended infrared lamps. The EcoGlow 50 chick heater accommodates up to 50 chicks, and reaches only about 115°! If you plan to brood baby chicks year after year, you will ultimately save enough money on electricity to make up the cost difference. (Plus, those lamps break and burn out, so you'll have to replace them, whereas the EcoGlow 50 is incredibly durable. We've been using ours for 7 years running!)

The height is adjustable, so as your chicks grow, your heater grows with them. Just twist the black "legs" to raise this heater up or down! And if you are raising a mixed batch of both bantams and large fowl chicks, or mixed ages, you can even set up your EcoGlow to be lower-to-the-ground on one side for the smaller chicks, and higher on the other for the larger chicks. Clever!

You don't need to worry about suspending this heater. The Sweeter Heater is another wonderful, safe chick heater that we love, but it does require that you suspend it.

Chicks love to be in the safety of the dark, so they're much quieter under this heater. And it makes sense! In nature, they'd be under mother hen's wing most of the time, in her dark, warm embrace. A heater like the EcoGlow does a great job of mimicking that environment. The first time we used the EcoGlow on a batch of chicks ourselves, we couldn't believe how quiet they were. We kept thinking there was something wrong with them! And boy, did we sleep better at night...

The top platform gives them more usable space in their brooder. As your chicks get older and require more space--and less heat--voila! The Brinsea EcoGlow provides. Chicks will learn to jump right on top. This extra surface effectively increases the amount of usable space in your brooder. (We even put an extra feeder and waterer on top of ours when brooding large batches of chicks.)

What this model is NOT good for:
  • Colder ambient temps. If your chicks will be in an area where the ambient temps are in the low 60°s, this heater won't be sufficient. We recommend the Sweeter Heater, in that case, as it reaches a full 185°.
  • Heating your coop in winter. As we explain explain here, in most instances, coop heaters really aren't necessary. But some folks live in bitterly, bitterly cold regions and want to take the edge off for their flock. The EcoGlow won't help with that. Instead, either the Sweeter Heater or the Cozy Coop Heate will work well for that purpose.
The EcoGlow 50 runs at 12 volts for safety from a mains transformer, supplied, and with has a convenient, ten foot power lead. Dimensions: 22" long x 16" wide x 9" high (with legs)
