Description:

Although Buff Orpingtons are the most common plumage of Orpington in the US--for some hatcheries, in fact, it is the only Orpington variety they offer!--in actuality Black was the original Orpington color. In the late 1800s, the Orpington breed was developed by coachman William Cook, who had a true passion for poultry. He concentrated on productive qualities first, and as a consequence Orpingtons are to this day very good layers of large brown eggs, produced even in the winter when many other birds take a break from laying. After Cook established production and docility in his breed, he then began developing different plumages… but black was the very first!

What could be cooler than a flock of hardy, productive Orpingtons, known as one of the lap birds of the poultry world? You can have black, blue, buff, lavender and jubilee Orpingtons, all with the same wonderful qualities and sweet personality.
