The Columbian variety is a more uncommon variety of the Wyandotte, and a wonderful example of American breeding.  These birds are beautiful and productive.

Wyandottes are a favorite amongst backyard flock owners for their dependable egg laying, easy going nature and cold hardiness.  The Columbian markings are striking: they are clean white birds with black tails and black dotted hackles. The hens look as if they're garbed in a stole of heraldic ermine, with a black chemise peeking out from beneath their argent gowns! The Columbian roosters have the same plumage, but their hackles and capes are composed of glimmering silver, while their shadowy tails are abundant, spreading ebony, like the plume of a foot soldier's hat. (We think Columbian Wyandottes should have medieval names like Giles, Alastair or Cecily.)

Wyandottes have a heavy body and small rose comb which makes this breed perfect for cold climates because they are not prone to frostbite.  The hens are hardy, energetic and faithful layers.
