Yes, you read that right: we have Blue Splash Marans eggs! This
variety is exceedingly rare, and most hatcheries don't even offer them,
whether as eggs or day-old chicks. The Marans chicks you find
offered at hatcheries are all of the Silver Cuckoo variety--other varieties are nearly impossible to find.
The beautiful Blue Splash Marans breed true: every egg will hatch a Blue Splash Marans, and if you breed your Blue Splashes together, they will produce 100% Blue Splashes, too. The original French birds had feathered
legs as will the chicks that hatch from these eggs (The
occurrence of a non feathered shank is uncommon, but may happen on a
rare occasion.)
The Marans breed was developed originally developed in France in the
mid 1800's in the town for
which it bears its name, Marans. (This is why the name of the breed
always has the "S" at the end, whether singular or plural.) Marans
became popular for their dark mahogany-brown eggs--a trait they are
still known for
today. Because of the beautiful eggs, Marans of any plumage are often
called "chocolate eggers." Colored eggs are always a more brilliant color early every laying season, and slowly
fade as the season progresses.

Blue Splash Marans are calm, quiet and gentle. They are also
fast growers and fantastic foragers. We do select for the darkest eggs with our Blue Splashes, but egg color with this variety is not as dark as with Black Coppers and is a work in progress. Eggs are
medium dark as in our (coming soon!) photo.
