Our chicken coops are just plain better!

Don't you just love how other sellers photoshop chickens into their coop pictures or use stuffed animals? Here at My Pet Chicken, we don't just photograph our coops with our actual chickens, but we also keep every model in our own yards to run them through their paces. Over the past twelve years, we've improved our designs, materials, and manufacturing to bring you chicken coops that are truly a step above the rest. With features like:

  • Free with every purchase: a wire mesh floor for the run to keep rodents and burrowing predators out. You won't find this feature anywhere else!
  • Better quality latches, and dual latches on every opening to keep predators out
  • Extra deep droppings trays that actually work, lined with galvanized metal
  • Rear sliding window is made with strong plexiglass
  • Designs specified down to the millimeter for maximum usability
  • Optional covered runs to give your birds more space that can be added onto and connected together for even more space.

Roomy enough for 9-12 chickens

With plenty of roosting and nesting space, you can happily house up to nine standard-size chickens, or twelve or more bantams, depending on their size. This chicken coop, like every one we sell at My Pet Chicken, is NOT intended for full-time confinement. The run is convenient when you can't let your flock roam freely, but make sure your flock has several hours per day free-ranging or in a much larger run. Speaking of...

New! Add-on runs for a GREAT deal!

Our new Hen Pen Chicken Run is a big upgrade to any coop! Safely and easily give your birds more run space. At 8 feet long by 4 feet wide each, the Hen Pen Chicken Run is a nice fit with the Gambrel Roof XL Chicken Coop. It has the same anti-predator and anti-rodent features as the Gambrel XL, and you can optionally add a heavy-duty run cover for extra protection from the elements. Plus, you'll save big by purchasing runs along with your Gambrel XL versus buying them separately.

Clean Breezes = No Sneezes

Adequate ventilation is one of the most important features of any chicken coop. Chickens have especially sensitive respiratory systems, so airflow is key. That's why our Gambrel Roof XL chicken coop contains windows in the gable ends, front and rear, for cross-ventilation, plus an adjustable Plexiglas ventilation slot on the rear (new!). All three are backed by half-inch hardware cloth to keep pests and predators out. The windows on top of the doors don't close, because even in winter, chickens need fresh air. The adjustable ventilation slot can be slid open or shut, so you can dial in the amount of ventilation you want your birds to get. (And the opening from the "upstairs" of the chicken house to the "downstairs" run remains open, too.)

If you live in an extra cold climate and you're worried about your birds overwintering, it's a simple matter of tacking plastic sheeting over the front and rear windows in the window to decrease air flow.

Roost High, Nest Low

As any seasoned chicken keeper can tell you, chickens like to roost at night on the highest spot they can reach. (It's a status thing--don't ask!) And you know what chickens do in their sleep, right? They poop. A lot. So you sure don't want your hens sleeping where they nest, lest your eggs be smothered in poo! The Gambrel Roof XL chicken coop's rounded-edge roosting poles are placed high up enough that your flock won't be tempted to roost in their nest boxes, but low enough that their heads won't be smacking the ceiling when they jump up. There are 13.5 inches between the roosts and the ceiling at the peak, and a foot in from the outer edges of the coop, there are 11.5 inches.

The three roosting poles combined total over 100 inches in length, easily fitting nine chickens or more. Each perch is 9.5 inches from exterior walls / 10" from each other, so they're usable and accessible.

Double-Wide... 'Cause That's How We Roll

Conventional chicken wisdom has it that one nest box is required for every four to five hens, which would make the Gambrel Roof XL's three nest boxes plenty... But each is a double wide, accommodating two hens, so it's like having six nest boxes! You might think your hens would like the privacy of their own "stall"... but no. We often catch the rascals in our own coop laying eggs right on top of one another! Each "double wide" nest box is 22" wide x 11" deep x 10.5" at lowest and 14" high at the highest point.

To collect your eggs, just reach right in, no back-breaking-bending-over required! Each nest box has its own access door, located about waist-high for an average-sized adult.

Poopy Coop?

Cleanout is a breeze: just pull out the metal-lined droppings tray, dump the soiled bedding into your compost pile, add fresh bedding and replace the tray! You may have noticed chicken coops sold by some other outlets are barely an inch deep... We bet you can imagine what happens when you pull the tray out! The poopy bedding gets scraped by the frame above and falls right into the run below. How's helpful is that? Our droppings tray is an actually-usable 2.5" deep.

Bear in mind that the droppings tray won't be strong enough for you to place your waterer right on it (and you wouldn't want to, anyway -- the hens would be pooping in it from above)! You'll want to place your feeder and waterer in the run below.

Predation Prevention

Today's fluffy, fat, slow pet chickens are like sitting ducks! They have no way to protect themselves from predators, so it's the job of the chicken-keeper to make sure they're safe. The Gambrel Roof XL chicken coop has two barrel bolts on each door, and galvanized, welded, half-inch hardware cloth protecting the windows and the sides of the run. Plus, there's a new security feature! Your purchase now includes, at no extra charge, a half-inch hardware cloth "floor" with zip ties to secure it to your run and keep rodents and most predators from gaining entry.

Run, Chicken, Run!

Each bird in your flock needs at least ten square feet of space outdoors, so if you plan to confine your flock full-time in this coop, we recommend you limit yourself to... two. Yep, you read that right! Since there's only about 19.5 square feet of space in the run, you can only keep 2 chickens if you plan to keep them confined in this coop full time. So if you want more chickens, you need to provide them more outdoor space. That could come in many forms: you could free range your flock several hours each day; if you're handy, you could build out the back of their run and enclose a much larger space; you could set up electric poultry netting; you might even place your coop inside a much larger, predator-proof run!

Protect Your Coop Purchase...

...With a yearly stain or seal. The natural wood material will break down over time. If you do not, you can realistically expect six to eight years' use out of this coop. If you keep it in good shape by sealing it annually, you'll have it for many years to come.

Enhancements and Modifications

While we make every effort to ensure the product you purchase meets your expectations, the actual product may differ slightly from images and renderings shown due to enhancements and/or modifications made at the discretion of the manufacturer.

We ask that you send pictures of the damage so we can best determine the next steps to be taken. Please be aware that superficial scratches and dings may occur in the shipping process, and that we will replace or refund you for any broken, missing, or damaged pieces.

If you cancel your order before the coop leaves our warehouse, we'll refund you all but a $5 cancellation fee.

If you've changed your mind after your coop has shipped, you may return your new, unused, and unassembled coop with packaging intact in the original box, within 30 days of receipt. You will receive a full refund, minus your cost to send it back to us as well as a restocking fee of up to 20%. Just notify us and we'll provide return instructions. Once we have received and approved your items for resale, we'll promptly issue a refund.

Assembly Notes

All the hardware is included with purchase—even a screwdriver and awl! Holes are pre-drilled for ease of installation. With two people, allow approximately an hour; with just one, allow an hour and a half. Once you construct the coop, we recommend you let it "air out" for a bit before moving your chickens in. The non-toxic wood stain emits a slight odor that disappears over time. Use these assembly instructions rather than the ones provided with the coop, as these are larger and easier to read.
