We polled our staff here at MPC, and Vetericyn is one of the few items they unanimously consider a "must-have" for poultry keepers. It's a wound care product approved for use on animals containing hypochlorous acid.
Why is hypochlorous acid special? It's produced naturally by the body as a component of the immune response. It is safe and highly effective at killing a broad spectrum of microorganisms quickly, limiting the chance of infection to a wound, but without impeding healing like some of the other antibacterial agents do. Against E. coli, for instance, hypochlorous acid has been shown to be 98 times more effective than hydrogen peroxide! It is also proven to be non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and non-toxic to animals. See the study
Vetericyn is the only hypochlorous acid-based wound care product tested on and approved for use in animals. This topical solution is recommended by veterinarians to help clean and heal cuts, pecking wounds, bumblefoot, frostbite, and vent prolapse. It’s non-toxic and free of antibiotics, which means there’s no egg withdrawal period. This spray is a pain-free solution and will not sting or burn when applied to your flock members.
Directions: Clear feathers away from the affected area and trim if necessary. Adjust spray nozzle and saturate the affected area, flushing away any foreign debris. If a dressing is required, saturate the dressing with Vetericyn Plus® Poultry Care at each dressing change. Repeat 3-4 times per day until the wound is healed. No rinsing necessary. Faster healing is achieved when wounds are cleaned and maintained moist. Safe for use around the head and sensitive areas.
