Instructions and usage tips

  • Remove the lid and add 3-4 Tablespoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar or add a poultry water protector, such as First Saturday Lime, to prevent algae.
  • Fill with 12 gallons of water and close the lid, ensuring a secure fit.
  • Remove all other water sources and gather chickens around the waterer.
  • Tap the nipples until water fills the lip (the red color naturally attracts chickens.) Once one chicken begins drinking, the others are sure to follow!
  • Check water levels weekly (or longer) depending on your flock size, and refill as needed. Discard any stale water before refilling.
  • You can place blocks or bricks under the Waterer to accommodate your chickens’ drinking height needs.  

      Refill guidelines 

      • 3-5 Chickens every 4-6 weeks
      • 6-11 Chickens every 2-3 weeks
      • 12-15 Chickens every 1-2 weeks

      It works well for juvenile and adult birds, but very young chicks often don't have the strength yet to push the nipple valves. For newly hatched or week-old chicks, start with a small, shallow quart-sized chick waterer. Once they're a few weeks old and stronger, they can move to this style.
      Pull any other water sources for a day, then tap the nipple valves a few times until water fills the small cup underneath. Chickens are drawn to the red color and the movement, so once one bird figures it out, the rest usually follow within a few minutes. For reluctant flocks, keep tapping once or twice a day for a couple of days until everyone is drinking from it.
      It sits on the ground. There's no hardware for hanging, and 12 gallons of water is heavy enough that lifting it wouldn't be practical. Set it inside or just outside the coop where your flock can reach it easily, and refill from the top by removing the lid.
