Roomy enough for 5-6 chickens

With plenty of roosting and nesting space, you can happily house up to five standard-size chickens or six or more bantams, depending on their size. Like everyone we sell at My Pet Chicken, this chicken coop is NOT intended for full-time confinement. The run is convenient when you can't let your flock roam freely, but make sure your flock has several hours per day free-ranging or in a much larger run.

Roost High, Nest Low

As any seasoned chicken keeper can tell you, chickens like to roost at night in the highest spot they can reach. (It's a status thing--don't ask!) And you know what chickens do in their sleep, right? They poop. A lot. So you sure don't want your hens sleeping where they nest, lest your eggs are smothered in poo! The Gambrel Roof chicken coop's rounded-edge roosting poles are high enough that your flock won't be tempted to roost in their nest boxes but low enough that their heads won't be smacking the ceiling when they jump up. There are 13.5 inches between the roosts and the ceiling at the peak, and a foot in from the outer edges of the coop, there are 7 inches.

The two roosting poles totaled over 60 inches in length, easily fitting nine chickens. Each perch is 7 inches from exterior walls and 9.75" from each other, so they're usable and accessible.

Plenty of Nesting Boxes

Conventional chicken wisdom states that one nest box is required for every four to five hens, which would make the Gambrel Roof's four nest boxes plenty. Each nest box is 13" wide x 12.25" deep x 12" at the lowest and 16" high at the highest point.

To collect your eggs, reach right in; no back-breaking-bending-over is required! Each nest box has its own access door, located about waist-high for an average-sized adult.

Poopy Coop?

Cleanout is a breeze: pull out the metal-lined droppings tray, dump the soiled bedding into your compost pile, add fresh bedding and replace the tray! You may have noticed chicken coops sold by some other outlets are barely an inch deep... We bet you can imagine what happens when you pull the tray out! The poopy bedding gets scraped by the frame above and falls right into the run below. How helpful is that? Our droppings tray is an actually-usable 2.5" deep.

Remember that the droppings tray won't be strong enough to place your waterer right on it (and you wouldn't want to, anyway -- the hens would be pooping in it from above)! You'll want to place your feeder and waterer in the run below.

Predation Prevention

Today's fluffy, fat, slow pet chickens are like sitting ducks! They have no way to protect themselves from predators, so the chicken keeper's job is to ensure they're safe. The Gambrel Roof chicken coop has two barrel bolts on each door, and galvanized, welded, half-inch hardware cloth protecting the windows and the sides of the run. Plus, there's a new security feature! Your purchase now includes, at no extra charge, a half-inch hardware cloth "floor" with zip ties to secure it to your run and keep rodents and digging predators from gaining entry.

Run, Chicken, Run!

Each bird in your flock needs at least ten square feet of space outdoors, so if you plan to confine your flock full-time in this coop, we recommend you limit yourself to... two. Yep, you read that right! Since there are only about 10 square feet of space outdoors, you can only keep one chicken in this coop if you plan to keep them confined full-time. So if you want more chickens, you need to provide them with more outdoor space. That could come in many forms: you could free range your flock several hours each day; if you're handy, you could build out the back of their run and enclose a much larger space; you could set up solar-powered electric poultry netting; you might even place your coop inside a much larger, predator-proof run!

Protect Your Coop Purchase...

...With a yearly stain or seal. The natural wood material will break down over time. If you do not, you can realistically expect six to eight years of use out of this coop. If you keep it in good shape by sealing it annually, you'll have it for many years.

Enhancements and Modifications

While we make every effort to ensure the product you purchase meets your expectations, the actual product may differ slightly from the images and renderings shown due to enhancements and/or modifications made at the manufacturer's discretion.

Assembly Notes

All the hardware is included, plus a screwdriver and awl, and most holes are pre-drilled. A copy of the instructions will be included with your coop. With two people, allow approximately 45 minutes; with just one, allow an hour or so. Once you construct the coop, we recommend you let it "air out" for a bit before moving your chickens in. The non-toxic wood stain emits a slight odor that disappears over time.
