Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and that's one of the things that sets bokashi apart from regular composting. The fermentation process handles meat, fish, dairy, and cooked food, the kinds of scraps that would smell, attract pests, or just refuse to break down in a standard compost pile. Sprinkle a layer of bokashi bran over each addition of scraps, close the lid, and you're set.
Once your bin is full, seal it tight and let it sit for about two weeks. After that, the pre-composted material is ready to bury in a garden bed or add to an outdoor pile, where it breaks down quickly. The whole cycle is much faster than traditional composting, which can take months.
That's bokashi leachate, a naturally produced liquid from the fermentation process. Drain it every 2-3 days, dilute it roughly 1:100 with water, and use it to water your garden or lawn. It's a bonus fertilizer most first-time bokashi users don't expect.
