Description:

Exclusive handmade Chicken Saddles! One of our very own employees is a former fashion-industry pro, and has designed and sewn these chicken saddles just for chicken lovers.

Chicken saddles—also called aprons or feather protectors—are used to help prevent feather loss from over-mating or feather pecking. (Please note: we recommend determining what is causing the picking in your flock so you can address the source of the problem while the saddle helps you to alleviate the effects.)

Material is quilting fabric that is lined with cotton flannel for extra padding or warmth.

How to measure your chicken for a chicken saddle:

With one end of the tape measure even with the wing joint on their upper back, measure down the mid-line of their back to the base of their tail. You can use that measurement to choose what size your bird will need.

Small:  5.5 inches long, 5 inches wide
Medium: 7 inches long, 7.5 inches wide
Large: 9 inches long, 9.5 inches wide

Note: Please choose the size needed for your chicken at checkout. The color and pattern options may differ from what is shown due to fabric availability.

Return Information: You may return unused aprons for a refund, minus a $3 processing fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Feather loss on the back and shoulders can come from a dominant hen mounting her flockmates just as easily as from an overactive rooster. A saddle works the same way in both situations, protecting the skin and feather regrowth while you work on addressing the behavior underneath.
Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. You'll see them called saddles, aprons, or feather protectors depending on the seller. Our own return policy refers to them as aprons -- same product, different names.
Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons keepers reach for them. Pin feathers are fragile and tend to attract flockmates' attention. A saddle shields that vulnerable area while new feathers harden and fill in, giving your hen a real chance to recover instead of being set back by repeated pecking.
