Frequently Asked Questions

The main difference is the grain base and energy level. The soy-free starter includes corn, which runs higher in energy and works well for chicks in cooler climates. This version uses peas, barley, wheat, and oats instead, giving you a lower-energy blend that's a better fit for hot-climate flocks or anyone who needs to keep both soy and corn out of the diet.
No, it's medication-free. Certified organic certification requires that no synthetic medications are used, so there's no amprolium or other coccidiostats in this feed. That makes it a safe choice if your chicks were vaccinated for coccidiosis, since medicated feed would counteract that protection.
Ten chicks eat about a pound of feed per day, so a 40 lb bag gets you through roughly five to six weeks for a flock of ten. Smaller flocks of four or five will stretch it to ten weeks or more. Since the transition to grower feed happens around five weeks, one bag typically covers the full starter stage for most backyard flocks.
The protein comes mainly from fish meal, along with organic peas, barley, wheat, and oats. Fish meal supplies the amino acids that soybean meal would typically provide in a conventional feed, so your chicks still get everything they need without soy or corn in the mix.
