Believed to have originated on the Indonesian island of Java, the Ayam Cemani is one of the world’s most distinctive chicken breeds. Its dramatic, shadowy appearance comes from fibromelanosis, a genetic condition that causes extensive black pigmentation throughout the body. This includes the feathers, comb, beak, skin, wattles, meat, bones, and internal organs. Despite a common misconception, the breed’s blood is not black.

Ayam Cemanis were once regarded as sacred in their native region, and it is easy to see why. Their glossy black plumage can is shimmer with green and purple tones in the sunlight, giving them an elegant, almost otherworldly appearance. Beneath that dramatic look, however, is a generally friendly and gentle bird that can become a captivating addition to an experienced keeper’s flock.

Ayam Cemani hens are not considered high-production layers. For most keepers, the breed’s rarity, beauty, and unique heritage are its greatest appeal.

Important Coloration Note

The degree and distribution of black pigmentation can vary among offspring. Some birds may display mulberry coloring in the comb, wattles, or earlobes, as well as lighter coloring on the tongue, inside the mouth, or toes. For this reason, completely uniform black pigmentation cannot be guaranteed.

• Our six-week old started pullets are floor-raised and socialized with humans, and their beaks are intact--we never trim.
• Please keep your 6-week-olds quarantined from your existing flock for four or more weeks, and take care when introducing them.

Pullet Shipping Information

• All Started Juveniles are shipped USPS Priority Mail Express.
• Due to import regulations, we cannot ship to Iowa, Nevada, West Virginia, Texas, or Hawaii.
• Pullets will ship on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of the designated shipping week. You will receive an email with tracking information once they leave the farm.
