Description:

Gentle radiant heat for the coldest nights, and an outlet that only turns it on when it's actually cold. This bundle pairs our favorite radiant heater, the Sweeter Heater, with a Thermo Cube thermostat outlet. Your heater runs when the temperature drops and rests when it rises, so you're not unplugging it on mild afternoons or paying to run it when your hens don't need it.

What's in the bundle

  • 1 Sweeter Heater in the size and mount you choose: 11" x 11", 11" x 16", 11" x 30" or 11" x 40", side mount or overhead
  • 1 Thermo Cube TC-3 double outlet: turns on below 35°F and off above 45°F

How it works

Plug the Thermo Cube into a standard 120V outlet on a GFCI-protected circuit, then plug your Sweeter Heater into the Thermo Cube. When the air around the Thermo Cube drops below 35°F, it switches the heater on. Once it warms above 45°F, it switches the heater off. No dials to set and nothing to remember.

The Thermo Cube reads the temperature where it's plugged in, so use an outlet that gets as cold as your coop, not one in a heated garage or basement.

Why a Sweeter Heater instead of a heat lamp

  • Stays below 185°F, versus 430°F and up for a traditional heat bulb
  • Uses 32 to 150 watts depending on size, versus 250 watts for a heat bulb
  • Warms your birds directly rather than the air, so they get the most benefit roosting or resting close to it
  • Designed and assembled in the USA, with a three-year warranty against defects in material or workmanship

Which size do you need?

For winter coop use, placement matters more than head count. Mount the heater close to where your flock roosts so your birds are near the heating surface. The 11" x 40" is the size suited to grown chickens of all heights, and when in doubt, size up.

  • 11" x 11": 32 watts
  • 11" x 16": 50 watts
  • 11" x 30": 100 watts
  • 11" x 40": 150 watts

Side mount units fasten flush to a wall or ceiling and come with brackets and screws. Overhead units hang from the 20-inch chains and S hooks included. Even the largest Sweeter Heater is well within the Thermo Cube's 15-amp rating.

Good to know

  • Brooding chicks? Get the Sweeter Heater on its own. Chicks need steady heat day and night, and the Thermo Cube switches off above 45°F.
  • Keep at least 6 inches of air space between the heater and bedding, straw or anything else that can burn, and make sure it can't fall with its heating surface covered.
  • Most hens do fine in a dry, draft-free coop. A heater takes the edge off for your hens on the coldest nights, and your coop still needs ventilation either way.
  • Read the Sweeter Heater installation instructions before you mount it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plug the Thermo Cube into a standard 120V outlet on a GFCI-protected circuit, then plug the Sweeter Heater into the Thermo Cube. It turns the heater on when the air around it drops below 35°F and off when it rises above 45°F.
We don't recommend it. Chicks need steady heat around the clock, and the Thermo Cube switches off above 45°F. For brooding, get the Sweeter Heater on its own.
Use an outlet that gets as cold as your coop. The Thermo Cube reads the air temperature where it's plugged in, so an outlet in a heated garage or basement won't switch the heater on when the coop gets cold.
Yes. The Thermo Cube has two outlets. Keep the total load within its 15-amp rating; the largest Sweeter Heater uses 150 watts.
For winter coop use, focus on placement rather than head count: mount the heater close to where your flock roosts so birds are near the heating surface. The largest model (11 x 40 inch) is suited to grown chickens of all heights. When in doubt, size up.
No. The Sweeter Heater warms whatever is directly in front of or beneath it rather than the air in the whole coop. The heat passes through the air and is absorbed by solid objects like your birds, so they benefit most when roosting or resting close to it.
